Some performances remind us what excellence looks like. Others remind us what it feels like.

At the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Bárbara “Babi” Domingos stepped onto the floor at Porte de La Chapelle Arena for the individual rhythmic gymnastics all-around qualification. By the end of the competition, the Brazilian gymnast had made history as the first athlete from Brazil, and from anywhere in the Americas, to reach an Olympic individual all-around final in the sport. She finished tenth overall, competing as the only gymnast representing the Americas in the final.

Two years later, that performance continues to find new audiences, reminding us that some moments do not fade into the archives. They continue to inspire.

Since Paris, Domingos has continued to build on that historic moment. In 2026, she captured her third consecutive Pan American individual all-around title in Rio de Janeiro, where the Pan American Rhythmic Gymnastics Championship unfolded at Arena Carioca 1 in the city’s Olympic Park. In August, the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championships bring the sport’s global stage to Frankfurt’s Festhalle, where Domingos continues forward with the standard she has been setting.

The performance that stayed with us.

What captivated us in Paris was not just the history being made around her. It was the performance itself.

Every elite routine carries years the audience will never see. There are early mornings, repeated combinations, injuries, disappointments, and moments when continuing requires its own kind of courage. We know all of that is there, but for a few extraordinary minutes, Domingos made us forget it.

Every movement was deliberate, yet nothing felt strained. Her extensions reached beyond the expected, and each turn seemed to gather the light before giving it back. Her ruby-red leotard became part of the performance. The crystal details and carefully matched illusion panels moved with her beneath the arena lights, highlighting the precision and artistry of every gesture.

Nothing about the routine asked the audience to dwell on sacrifice. Instead, it invited us to experience beauty, and perhaps that is what made it so unforgettable.

Black women are often celebrated through stories of what they have survived or overcome. Those stories matter, but they are not the only stories worth telling. Sometimes excellence should be allowed to stand on its own, so we can admire the discipline without requiring pain to explain the greatness. We can recognize the years of preparation while still allowing joy, command, and artistry to lead the story.

Babi Domingos is not simply carrying expectations or making history. She is creating something beautiful, and that is what stays with us.

Why We Chose Her

Because excellence can be breathtaking, joyful, and deeply artistic at the same time.

Babi Domingos reminds us what happens when talent, discipline, and imagination meet. Her performance was not simply something to admire. It was a glimpse of what becomes possible when preparation becomes beauty.

What We’d Gift Her

After a performance like this, it would be tempting to choose something that sparkles.

We’d choose something that reflects instead. One gift recognizes the quiet discipline behind the performance, and the other is reserved for the hours when nothing more is required of her.
